What can plants teach us about solar power? Lilja 3rd and 4th graders have some great ideas!
Last Friday, Wellesley College students volunteering with Solarize Natick visited Lilja to teach a hands-on workshop on solar. After a short presentation about Solarize Mass Natick and a great discussion of the advantages and challenges of renewable energy (these kids are smart!), the Wellesley students went out to Lilja’s outdoor classroom and helped the Lilja students look at the different ways plants and trees are structured to take advantage of sunlight. The 3rd and 4th graders diagrammed how the plants were built, and then drew solar arrays to match. It was a great experience for Solarize Mass Natick, the Wellesley students, and the Lilja 3rd and 4th graders.
Paul Paul Power, a science teacher at Kennedy Middle School, explains why he put a solar array on his home with Boston Solar last year.

Natick is already a leading solar suburb in Metrowest. There are nearly 300 homes with solar in Natick, which is just ahead of Milford and Marlborough. When you look at the number of installs per resident, however, Natick is actually in the middle of the pack. Only 2 out of every 100 homes have solar. The regional leader is Harvard, where nearly 5 of every 100 homes have solar. It is no coincidence that Harvard was one of the first towns to take part in Solarize Massachusetts. That is why Natick volunteers have brought Solarize Mass Natick with its community education program and discounted pricing to Natick this year!
